Surtout porté en Savoie, le nom se rencontre aussi dans le Doubs. Le nom commun 'paviet' est mentionné en ancien français avec le sens de 'pavois' (sorte de bouclier). On retiendra donc d'abord cette solution (surnom d'un porteur de pavois, éventuellement d'un fabricant). Autre possibilité : celui qui vient de Pavie. Forme voisine : Paviot (18, 38).
